While most may not make a big deal out of it, especially when it comes to large companies like hospitals serving thousands of people every day, it was a big deal to the many small businesses Stericycle has served all these years. A lawsuit in Illinois came about when a veterinary clinic saw its charges increase by 21.1% in 2009, 17.8% in 2010, and 25.4% in 2012.
According to New York’s Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman, Stericycle has been overcharging over 1000 New York Government entities since 2003. He plans on making them pay for it. Mr. Schneiderman announced a $2.4 million settlement with Stericycle. As a result of this settlement, Stericycle will be required to pay back 100% of the overcharged amount to every entity that fell victim to it’s scheme. This will cost Stericycle $820,000 in total.
However, New York and Illinois are not the only states catching on to Stericycle’s scheme. While Connecticut has not pronounced that this practice is illegal, there are already processes in order to get this dilemma under control. Connecticut representatives are already petitioning in the House of Representatives to make this act of improperly overcharging companies illegal in the state of Connecticut.
Many businesses today rely on automatic payments and do not realize if they are being overcharged or still paying for a service they do not need. While medical waste disposal is a necessary service, you should not be overpaying.
